Near East University Faculty of Veterinary Members Were Awarded with Their Studies on Sunflower Oil in Deep Frying Processes …

Near East University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Biochemistry Assist. Prof. Dr. Serkan Sayıner, research assistants Deniz Ceylanlı and Sevgi Gençosman won the best oral presentation award with his oral presentation in 2nd International and 10th National Veterinary Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry Congress organized by Ankara University Department of Biochemistry.

According to the information provided by the Press and Public Relations Department of the Near East University, “Effects of Deep-Frying Sunflower Oil alone and in combination with Probiotics in Mice: A Biochemical, Histological and Spermatological approach” by Assist. Prof. Dr. Serkan Sayıner received the best oral presentation award.

Prof. Dr. Nurhayat Gülmez, Assist. Prof. Dr. Zafer Sabit and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Gülmez is also included in the project which was supported by the Center of Excellence of the Near East University.

Infertility is one of the most important problems of our time…

The study carried out by Assist. Prof. Dr. Serkan Sayıner reported that sunflower oil in both raw and fried state had negative effects on blood fats, male reproductive organs and sperm quality and caused oxidative damage in the long term. In the present study which is based on the intestinal-brain axis which is one of the latest concepts, the probiotics were investigated for the protection against the negative effects of frying oil. The findings of the study showed that probiotic consumption can alleviate such negative effects and thus, a study model was formed in order to better understand the effects of fast food dietary habits on global fertility rates.

The effect of palm oil consumption on sperm quality and protective effect of kefir were investigated…

Deniz Ceylanlı, a research assistant at the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Near East University, presented a study titled “The consequences of deep-frying palm oil consumption on blood lipids, lipid peroxidation and spermatological parameters in mice: Could kefir be protective against possible adverse effects?”. Prof. Dr. Nurhayat Gülmez, Head of Zootechnics and Animal Nutrition Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilek Arsoy, Head of Department of Biochemistry Assist. Prof. Dr. Serkan Sayıner, Head of Virology Department Assist. Prof. Dr. Ayfer Fındık and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Gulmez have participated in this multi-disciplinary project which was supported by the Center of Excellence of the Near East University.

The findings of the study showed that palm oil had a negative effect on sperm quality and male reproductive organ, especially increased lipid peroxidation, increased abnormal sperm percentage and decreased testicular tissue score. However, it was found that consumption of kefir reduces lipid peroxidation and may contribute to reducing the negative effects of palm oil consumption.

High-dose paracetamol usage causes organ toxicity…

In the congress, the study entitled “The protective effect of Ambroxol in acetaminophen-induced hepatoxicity in rats” presented by Research Assistant Sevgi Gençosman, also attracted attention.

Acetaminophen, which is a commonly used pain reliever and antipyretic, also known as paracetamol, causes organ toxicity due to oxidative stress, especially the liver, with single or long-term use. In the study, the possible antioxidant effects of Ambroxol use against this toxic effect were investigated. Sevgi Gençosman stated that the study findings indicate that the use of Ambroxol restores the antioxidant enzyme activities, reverts to normal levels of liver enzyme activities, and therefore should be considered as an antioxidant agent in the prevention of acetaminophen-induced liver damage and further studies should be done.

The study was conducted in collaboration with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özer Şehirli, Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Dentistry, Near East University; Assist. Prof. Dr. Serkan Sayıner and Research Assist. Sevgi Gençosman from the Department of Biochemistry, Research Assistant Hüseyin Şah from the Department of Histology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Near East University.

Near East University Faculty Members’ Work Was Acclaimed…

In the three-day congress which included experts from the field of biochemistry from many different countries, the latest developments were discussed via oral and poster presentations on cancer, apoptosis, prion diseases, nanotherapeutics, stem cell, nutritional biochemistry, acute phase reactants, duration health metabolic parameters and many other current topics.
